Clear App Data Backup

Learn how to clear local app data backups for specific apps to free up storage while keeping profiles intact on the server.

What is Clear App Data Backup?

The Clear App Data Backup feature allows you to delete all local backups of specific app data from your device. This action deletes all backups for that app regardless of which group they were created in or how they were created. This is useful when you want to:

  • Free up storage space by removing non-critical app backups
  • Clear backups for specific apps while preserving backups for others in a group
  • Maintain profile configurations on the server while managing local storage
  • Remove app data backups that you no longer need to restore

How It Works

The Clear App Data Backup feature performs the following actions:

  1. Targets Specific App — Geergit identifies all local backup data for the specific app you select, regardless of which groups or profiles created them
  2. Removes All App Backups Globally — Deletes ALL local backup files for that app across your entire device without affecting:
    • Profile values and settings (stored on the server)
    • Identity configurations for that app
    • Profiles themselves on the server
    • Apps in other groups
  3. Preserves Server Data — All profile values and identity configurations remain intact on your Geergit server. Only the local app data backups are deleted.

Use Cases

Scenario 1: Managing Non-Critical App Backups

You have a group containing WebView, Chrome, and your victim app, or Chrome exists independently in another group. You want to free up storage by removing all backups for WebView and Chrome since they're less critical.

Solution: Use Clear App Data Backup on WebView and Chrome individually. This will delete ALL backups for those apps from your device, regardless of which groups or how they were created. Your victim app backups remain intact.

Scenario 2: Backup Management After Profile Operations

After creating and managing multiple profiles, you may have accumulated backup data. Clear unnecessary app backups to optimize storage without losing your profile configurations.

Important Notes

!WARNING This action permanently deletes ALL local backup files for the selected app from your device and cannot be undone. You will not be able to restore app data for this app when switching profiles after clearing the backup. This affects all backups for that app, whether created individually, in groups, or anywhere else.

!TIP App data backups are stored only locally on your device and are never sent to the server. Your profile values and settings remain on the server. You can recreate backups at any time by switching profiles or manually backing up app data again.

!NOTE Clearing an app's backup data does not delete the profile itself or its values—only the local app data backup files. Profile values and configurations remain on the server.

After Clearing App Data Backup

Once the backup is cleared:

  • Local storage is freed — All app data backup space for this app is released on your device
  • Profile values remain on server — All your profile values and configurations are still available on the Geergit server. They are never stored locally
  • App switching behavior changes — When you switch profiles, this app's data will not be restored (if auto-restore was enabled)
  • Backup can be recreated — You can create a new backup for this app at any time by switching profiles again with Backup App Data enabled
  • Global impact — The backup deletion affects all instances of this app across all groups and profiles

Recovery Options

If you need to restore app data for this app after clearing the backup:

  2. Manual Backup — You can manually create a new backup through the Backup section in Settings
  3. Re-enable Auto Backup — Ensure Backup App Data is enabled so future profile switches create new backups
